Fusible PVC® Pipe And Trenchless Methods Solve Unique Crossing Challenges

Aurora, Indiana installed twin 12-inch ductile iron sanitary sewer force main pipelines along US Highway 50 in the 1970s. During the expansion of US Highway 50 years later, complications to the pipelines from the construction activity caused repeated failures. Aurora Utilities, with the help of GRW Engineers, Inc. elected to relocate the force mains and increase the capacity of the force mains at the same time. The new alignment had multiple creek, driveway, road and railroad crossings in the developed area. Additionally, a site having archeological significance was identified along the alignment. Trenchless installation methods, including horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and jack & bore, were chosen for the various crossings and the archeological site.
