Will County, the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Villages of Bolingbrook & Romeoville embarked on a joint project to relieve congestion on the very heavily traveled Weber Road. Prior to beginning the roadway widening construction, Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) needed to relocate its existing overhead power distribution cables. ComEd saw a benefit in the reliability and protection associated with undergrounding their cables, however, undergrounding with traditional construction methods would have been difficult. Instead, ComEd turned to horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and Fusible PVC® conduit and casing to complete this difficult project.
