City of Golden selects pipe bursting and Fusible PVC® pipe for water line rehabilitation

Golden, Colorado is rich with culture, outdoor activities, scenic beauty, thriving businesses and friendly people, but the city’s origins are largely thanks to another valuable resource – gold. A small amount of gold discovered in Clear Creek, adjacent to the city, attracted the area’s earliest settlers in the 1800s and Golden City quickly became an important supply stop for gold miners seeking their fortunes in the adjacent mountains.

When an 8-inch cast iron waterline was found to have an inadequate pressure rating to accommodate a connection to a higher-pressure zone, the community turned to Martin/Martin, Inc., a consulting engineering firm located in nearby Lakewood, Colorado. Martin/Martin suggested trenchless replacement due to a parallel gas line and multiple utility crossings over the 643-foot section that was too risky to avoid during an open-cut installation. Martin/Martin discussed the project with a well-known Colorado trenchless contractor, Global Underground Corporation.
