Underground Solutions and Beaufort Jasper Water & Sanitation Authority (BJWSA) in South Carolina, installed a one-mile long, 10-inch diameter Fusible PVC® pipe using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) methods in 2007. Mears Group was the HDD contractor and Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung performed the engineering for this historical crossing of the Beaufort River. At the time, this installation tripled the longest length of Fusible PVC® pipe that had ever been installed using HDD methods, was an important milestone project and demonstrated the capability of Fusible PVC® pipe for long and deep HDD projects. This ‘industry first’ type of project required a focused attention to detail, a high-quality pipe product and a great contractor, engineering and end user team. The project was a landmark success and that pipe is still in service today.
