The City of Elba, Alabama is situated outside of Enterprise, Alabama and has experienced significant growth in recent years. With that growth has come the need for infrastructure improvements. Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) identified three sections of Highway 84 to undergo widening in and around Elba. These projects necessitated relocation of the existing water utilities in the right-of-way located under Highway 84 and attached to certain bridges. CDG Engineers and Associates, Inc. (CDG) was the engineer tasked with designing all three sites and they required utility relocations.
Similar to recent projects, Fusible PVC® pipe was the material of choice by CDG for the trenchless sections of the project. Fusible PVC® pipe is an approved material for carrier pipe as an AWWA C900 PVC pressure pipe under ALDOT highways and is also approved by Georgia DOT and Florida DOT as a casing pipe material installed by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) under their highways. The Phase II and Phase III Water Improvements Projects required installing segments of casing using jack & bore methods, with 6-inch restrained joint carrier pipe, as well as HDD sections, all utilizing Fusible PVC® pipe. Fusible PVC® pipe provided material consistency for the entire pipeline and ease of long-term maintenance for the City of Elba’s Water Department by utilizing standard PVC mechanical joint fittings.
